Understanding Bone Mineral Density & T-Scores

A T-score compares an individual's bone mineral density (BMD) to the peak bone mass expected in a healthy young adult of the same sex. It is expressed in standard deviations (SD) from that reference mean, serving as the primary diagnostic metric established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for assessing fracture risk.

WHO Diagnostic Criteria

  • Normal: T-score of -1.0 or higher.
  • Osteopenia: T-score between -1.0 and -2.5, indicating lower than peak bone mass.
  • Osteoporosis: T-score of -2.5 or lower, indicating significantly increased risk of fragility fractures.
